Dear August...

Dear August,
I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about your arrival.
On one hand, you're one of my favorite months. It’s my birthday month! Gardens are overflowing. The days are still long enough for evening walks and sitting by the lake. Sweet corn finally tastes like summer, tomatoes are at their best, and there's something magical about the golden light that seems to settle over everything.
On the other hand...you quietly remind me that summer is slowly coming to an end. Somehow, you've become the month that whispers, "Don't rush."
So this year, instead of making a list of everything I hope to accomplish, I have a different request. Help me notice. Help me notice the sunset instead of saying, I'll catch the next one. Help me stay on the porch a little longer, even when there are dishes in the sink. Help me appreciate the flowers that are blooming today instead of worrying about what they'll look like next week.
And if you could keep the mosquitoes away while we're at it, I'd really appreciate that. While you're working your magic, could you also do something about the humidity? My hair and I would both be grateful.
Remind me that one more boat ride, one more scoop of ice cream, one more backyard fire, or one more conversation with someone I love is never time wasted. In fact, maybe that's what summer has been trying to teach us all along.
The best moments rarely make it onto our calendars. They happen when we linger. When we laugh a little longer. When we say yes to one more walk. When we stop checking the time. When we realize that this ordinary Tuesday is actually pretty extraordinary.
It's easy to think life is made up of the big milestones—the promotions, the vacations, the celebrations, the accomplishments. But if I've learned anything, it's this: life is also built from quiet evenings, unexpected conversations, shared meals, and moments we almost missed because we were too busy thinking about what was next.
So, Dear August, here's my promise to you.
I'll try not to rush through the next four weeks. I'll complain a little less about the heat...well, I'll try. I'll soak up the sunshine while it's here. I'll choose a few memories over a few more checkmarks on my to-do list. I'll make time for the people who matter. And I'll remember that these are the days I'll probably look back on someday and wish I had appreciated just a little bit more.
When September arrives, I don't want to wonder where August went. I want to smile because I was fully present while it was here.
Here's to one more beautiful month of summer.
Let's make it count—not by doing more, but by noticing more.
