Finding Your Purpose: Strategies for Uncovering Your Passions

Do you ever feel like you’re just going through the motions? Especially during moments of big life changes and transitions, it can be easy to feel like you’re walking around with a blindfold on.

Finding your purpose in life is imperative to navigate these moments successfully. If you want to find happiness in times of hardship, you have to understand what lights you up. This is what will encourage you to keep moving forward, even when it feels too hard.

Here are some tips to help you uncover your passions and align them with your goals so that you can have a clearly defined purpose in life.

Write Down a List of Your Interests

Start uncovering your passions by sitting down with a pen and paper. Get yourself into a clear headspace to reflect on the following questions:

  • What really lights you up?

  • What do you love to do the most?

  • When are you the happiest?

  • What matters most to you?

  • What are the things you cannot live without?

  • What are you good at?

Sometimes, we can lose sight of our interests, especially as we grow older and more practical tasks start to take over our to-do lists. By sitting down and focusing on things that matter most to you, you’ll be able to start figuring out your passions and working to align them with your goals.

Identify Where You Shine

Each of us has a unique personality with different skillsets. Understanding what these skills are will help you create a clearer path forward.

To help you figure out where you shine, take a personality test. Some popular ones include 16 Personalities, Interpersonal Skills Assessment, Big 5 Personality Test, and Truity Enneagram Personality Test. These tests will give you an unbiased and clear understanding of how to use your strengths and weaknesses to develop a plan for happiness and success.

Connect with Other People with Similar Interests

Getting a mentor or joining a group of people who have similar interests can help a lot in your quest to uncover your passions. Surrounding yourself with supportive people will help you feel supported as you work to find your purpose in life.

When you’re looking for guidance on your career, relationships, or other big life challenges, working with a mentor, a therapist, or a coach will provide you with an unbiased outlook that is needed to overcome obstacles and align your goals with your true purpose. This person can also hold you accountable to ensure that you continue to take the action needed to move forward.

Align Your Values with Your Goals

One of the reasons why people feel so lost and unfulfilled is because their goals don’t align with their values or purpose. They are doing what they think they’re supposed to do but not working on projects that are truly important to them.

Taking time to align your goals with your values will help you more than you might realize. When you start to achieve goals that truly matter to you, the feeling of accomplishment is unlike any other.
