Surviving the Winter Blahs (Wisconsin Edition)

If you live in Wisconsin, you know late February is not for the faint of heart. December snow was magical. January was predictably cold. Even early February feels somewhat seasonal. But late February? Late February is when winter overstays its welcome.
You get one 40-degree day and suddenly everyone’s outside like it’s spring break. Coats unzipped. Sunglasses on. Someone is definitely grilling. You think, This is it. We made it.
And then. Nineteen degrees. Again. The snowbanks are gray. Your boots are tired. You’re tired. The sky has been the color of oatmeal for approximately 47 consecutive days. And who knows where the sun has gone.
Welcome to the February Blahs. And if we’re honest, it’s not just the weather. Sometimes we feel a little blah too. Not sad. Not dramatic. Just… flat. A little unmotivated. Slightly wondering if we’ll ever feel energetic again.
So what do we do when we can’t fast-forward to April? Here’s how to survive late winter — without booking a one-way ticket to Florida.
Spring Doesn’t Solve Everything
First, stop acting like spring is your only emotional plan. Yes, sunshine helps. Yes, warmth is wonderful. But if your mood depends entirely on 60 degrees, that’s a risky strategy in Wisconsin. Instead of waiting for the season to change, change something small inside your day.
Rearrange a room. Buy fresh flowers at the grocery store (even if they feel slightly rebellious in February). Open the blinds the second the sun appears like it’s a celebrity sighting. Light candles at 5:00 p.m. when it starts getting dark again. You may not be able to control the temperature outside, but you can absolutely control the atmosphere inside.
Revitalize Through Movement
Second, move your body. Winter has a way of turning us into decorative throw pillows. We sit more. We scroll more. We hibernate professionally. And then we wonder why we feel sluggish. You don’t need a bootcamp class. You don’t need to love it. Just move.
Step outside and shovel a little snow — even if it doesn’t technically need it. Rearrange a drawer. Vacuum one room with surprising determination. Do ten minutes of stretching while watching the news. Walk the aisles of Target like it’s an indoor track.
It doesn’t have to be athletic. It just has to be movement. Energy wakes up when you do.
What Are You Looking Forward To?
Third, put something on the calendar that feels like hope. Late winter feels endless because nothing feels different from one day to the next. So give yourself something to look forward to. A lunch with a friend. A short road trip. A class. A project.
Planning your garden counts. Researching patio furniture counts. Even dreaming counts. When you have something circled on the calendar, February stops feeling like a tunnel and starts feeling like a stretch of road. Hope is powerful.
Embrace Winter for What it Is!
And finally, use the season instead of fighting it. Winter is quiet. And while we don’t always love that, there’s something valuable about it. Maybe this is a good time to reflect a little.
To ask yourself what you want more of when life speeds up again. To notice what feels energizing and what feels draining. To adjust something before spring arrives. Spring is great for action. Winter is surprisingly good for clarity.
Here’s what I know: Spring is coming. It always does. Even when Wisconsin tests our faith. The days are already getting longer. The light is shifting. Things are happening underground, even if everything still looks frozen.
And if you’re feeling a little blah right now, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck. It might just mean you’re in a slower season. So add light. Move your body. Plan something. Be unapologetically enthusiastic about candles.
You don’t have to love late February. But you can absolutely outsmart it!
