Things I Never Thought I'd Be Doing at This Age

If you had told me ten years ago that I'd be spending my days decorating cookies, caring for farm animals, and exploring entirely new possibilities for the future, I probably would have laughed. Not because those things are bad. Quite the opposite. I simply couldn't have imagined them.

When we're younger, we often create a picture of what our future will look like. We make plans, set goals, and assume life will unfold in a fairly predictable way. Then life happens. Some dreams come true. Others quietly fade away. New opportunities appear that we never saw coming. And somehow, we find ourselves doing things that weren't anywhere on the original roadmap.

Lately, I've been thinking about all the things I never expected to be doing at this stage of life. I never thought I'd be learning a completely new creative skill and spending hours watching decorating videos, practicing techniques, and feeling excited when something finally turned out the way I imagined.

I never thought I'd be living a life that revolves around miniature donkeys, horses, chickens, goats, and all the adventures that come with them. I certainly never expected to know as much as I now do about foaling dates, hoof care, fencing, animal nutrition, and the unique personalities that each animal brings to the farm. Some days I'm researching donkey pregnancies. Other days I'm filling water buckets, doing animal checks, or laughing at the antics happening in the pasture. None of that was part of my original life plan, but I can't imagine my life without it now.

I never thought I'd be considering new business ideas after retirement instead of simply slowing down. And I definitely never imagined that some of the things bringing me the most joy today would be things I hadn't even thought about a few years ago.

It's funny how life works that way. We often assume our most exciting chapters happen when we're young. We believe there comes a point when the major adventures are behind us and life settles into a predictable routine. But what if that's not true? What if some of the best surprises are still waiting? What if there are interests you haven't discovered yet, skills you haven't developed, friendships you haven't made, or opportunities you haven't even considered?

The older I get, the more I realize that life rarely follows a straight line. Looking back, I've realized that many of the things that bring me the most joy today were never goals. They were discoveries.

The things that have brought me the most happiness weren't always carefully planned. Many arrived unexpectedly. They started as a curiosity, a small idea, or a simple willingness to try something different. And that's what I love about this season of life. There's less pressure to have everything figured out and more freedom to explore. More freedom to change your mind, to start over, to say, "I've never done this before, but why not?"

Sometimes we convince ourselves that our story is already written. But maybe it isn't. Maybe there are still chapters we haven't imagined and passions we haven't discovered. Maybe there are opportunities waiting just outside our comfort zone.

And maybe one day you'll find yourself doing something you never thought you'd be doing at this age—and loving every minute of it. Life has a way of surprising us when we stay open to possibility. I'm certainly glad it surprised me.

What's something you're doing today that your younger self never would have predicted? I'd love to hear your story.
