What If It Works? The Question That Might Change Everything

Have you ever noticed how quickly our minds jump to worst-case scenarios when we’re thinking about trying something new? You know the kind of thoughts I’m talking about. What if it doesn’t work? What if I fail? What if I look foolish? What if I’m not good enough?

Our brains are incredibly creative when it comes to imagining everything that might go wrong. Often, those thoughts are enough to stop us before we ever even try.

But recently I started thinking about framing the question differently. What if we flipped that thinking around? What if, instead of asking what might go wrong, we asked what might go right? What if you did take that step you’ve been thinking about? What if you were nervous… but did it anyway? What if the thing that scares you a little is actually the thing that helps you grow the most?

So many opportunities in life sit quietly in front of us while we debate whether we’re ready, capable, or brave enough to take them. We wait for the perfect moment. We wait until we feel confident. We wait until we’re sure it will work out. But the truth is, most of the best things in life don’t come with guarantees.

Think about how many meaningful things begin with uncertainty. A new job, starting a business, signing up for a class, learning a new skill, volunteering for something new, or even sharing an idea you’ve been quietly thinking about—almost all of them begin with at least a little bit of doubt.

Maybe it’s something as simple as trying a new exercise routine. At first, it feels awkward and uncomfortable. You wonder if you’re doing it right. But after a few weeks, you begin to notice you feel stronger.

Or maybe it’s something bigger—like going back to school, applying for a job you’re not completely sure you’re qualified for, or finally starting that project you’ve been thinking about for years.

Most people who have done something meaningful can look back and remember the moment when they felt unsure but moved forward anyway. And often, the outcome wasn’t perfect. But it was still worth it because every step forward teaches us something. Sometimes it builds confidence. Sometimes it introduces us to new people. Sometimes it opens doors we didn’t even know were there. And sometimes it leads us somewhere far better than we ever imagined.

Being nervous doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do something. It simply means you’re stepping outside of what feels familiar. Growth tends to live just outside our comfort zone.

And here’s something else worth remembering: the things we regret most in life are often not the things we tried and failed. They’re the things we never attempted at all. The trip we never took. The opportunity we never explored. The idea we kept to ourselves.

Of course, things won’t always work out perfectly. Life has a way of surprising us in both directions. But even when something doesn’t go exactly as planned, we usually gain experience, confidence, or insight that helps us move forward. In other words, even the imperfect outcomes often lead us somewhere useful.

The bigger risk is often not failure. The bigger risk is never finding out what might have happened if we had tried.

So the next time you find yourself standing in front of an opportunity and your mind starts filling with all the “what ifs,” try asking a slightly different question.

Instead of asking, “What if it doesn’t work?”

Try asking, “What if it does?”
