Who Decided There Was an Age Limit?

I've noticed something interesting as I've gotten older.

In many ways, I trust myself more than I ever did when I was younger. I don't spend nearly as much time worrying about what everyone else thinks. I don't feel the need to explain every decision I make or ask for reassurance before trying something new. Experience has a wonderful way of teaching us that we usually figure things out, even when life doesn't go exactly as planned.

Age has a way of giving us confidence. So why do so many of us hesitate when it comes to starting something new? It's rarely because we doubt our abilities. More often, it's because we begin to question our timing. We tell ourselves, I'm too old to start a business. I should have done that years ago. It's probably too late now. What's the point?

Have you ever noticed that those thoughts seem to appear out of nowhere? No one actually says them to us. Our own minds simply decide that certain opportunities have an expiration date. But who decided that? Who decided there was an age limit on learning something new, chasing a dream, changing careers, writing a book, taking a class, or discovering a hobby that brings you joy? I certainly don't remember getting that memo.

When I look around, I see people who are doing incredible things in the second half of life. They're traveling to places they've always dreamed about. They're volunteering for causes they care deeply about. They're learning to paint, taking music lessons, opening small businesses, writing books, and saying yes to opportunities they might have passed by years ago.

They aren't trying to relive their younger years. They're simply making the most of the years they're living now. Sometimes we spend so much time looking back at what we didn't do that we forget to look ahead at everything we still can do.

The truth is, none of us knows how many years we have left. But we do know this: today is the youngest we'll ever be again. If there's something you've been thinking about for months—or maybe even years—perhaps it's time to stop asking whether you're too old and start asking a different question. What if this is exactly the right time?

What if all the experiences you've had, the lessons you've learned, and the wisdom you've gained have been preparing you for this very season of your life?

Maybe this chapter isn't about slowing down. Maybe it's about finally giving yourself permission to do the things you've always wanted to do.

So if there's a dream that's been quietly waiting in the background, don't dismiss it because of the number on your birthday cake. Trust yourself. Trust the life you've lived. And trust that some of the best chapters are still waiting to be written.

After all, there has never been an age limit on becoming who you're meant to be.
